Hiring the right contractor is key no matter what repair or home improvement you need.

1. In addition to talking to friends, neighbors and associates, speak with materials suppliers, who often know the “pros” from the “cons”.
2. Investigate prospective home improvement contractors by checking with the Better Business Bureau, the Attorney General’s office and the Consumers Affairs Department.
3. Ask to see their home improvement contractor’s license if required, proof of liability insurance and workers’ compensation. Be sure to call references.
4. Carefully review the contract so you will know how additional costs and project changes will be handled.
5. Visit the contractor’s current and previous projects to sample the quality of his work and cleanup.
6. For a better price, hire in the off season: deck work in January, interior remodeling in the summer, duct cleaning in the winter.
7. Most important, pay as you go. Never let the contractor get ahead on the money.
