Ever since the end of the civil war women were relied upon to take care of their family as housewives. Without the use of servants to help them around the kitchen women had to work alone within a kitchen and it was a huge chore taking care of everything for their family before electricity. Once homes started getting electricity and kitchen appliances began being invented, the load of work a woman had to do was lightened.
Ovens and stoves made making meals much easier for the women as now they could cook under even heating. Refrigerators and freezers allowed families to keep their food longer and allowed them not to have to worry about serving spoiled food. Dishwashers enabled them to clean dishes now without having to stand and wash them by hand, saving them time for other things. While there was never any intention to develop a microwave, they just happened to have been discovered during the creation of something else.
Since then there have been many improvements, other items were created to help people spend less time working and more time enjoying family time. Men have now taken a more prominent role within many kitchens and it is not unheard of to see a man taking food out of his ge microwave.
In the beginning they were large bulky appliances however the microwave of today can perform many tasks. An over the range microwave can be a fan, a light, a way to warm, thaw or cook food, as well as a timer to ensure you do not burn anything in the oven or stove. They are more compact and able to be mounted flush with the cabinets so that the power cords are well hidden away from view.
These appliances can be so easy to use, young children have even been taught how to use them. Although it is extremely important that some safety precautions are taught to them. You would not want to see them hurt or your property needlessly damaged. So before they place your bundt cake pan in the microwave to make you a cake, go over safe ways to use a microwave.
Of course you know that anything that contains metals such as twist ties, some types of dishes and other items could be a fire hazard in the microwave, however children need to be taught such things. It may be wise to make up some game where they can identify things not to place in the microwave before they are permitted to use it.
Fire safety may not be a bad discussion as well. There have been fires that have occurred from the improper use of a microwave. That being said as long as children are taught properly and supervised while using appliances such as this, there should be nothing to worry about.
You may have come across some rather unique microwaves, some have different ways of alerting someone that the item inside is ready or they may have raised bumps called braille on the buttons. These are for users with disabilities so that they can do things that everyone else does. There are microwaves for every household style in a full range of colors and materials, some may even be custom ordered.
