If you are part of the growing number of people who has decided to start a home based business, or your employer is allowing you to telecommute, you may be looking at setting up an office in your home.

Think about unused space in your home that could be converted into an office. Do you have an unused bedroom, space in your basement or attic or even a detached garage that you could use? If you choose a space that may not be heated, such as the attic or garage, research home space heaters as a heat source. There are many kinds as well as price ranges available and you may be able to find one to suit your needs.

Your office does not have to be elegant, but you will need some basic furniture. You will need a desk and many computer desks have enough room for you computer as well as writing room. Many also have drawers that will accommodate hanging files which would be handy for keeping your records. If yours does not, visit an office supply store. You will find many home office storage options such as filing cabinets or boxes that you can store items or hang files in.

You will be spending a great deal of time in your office, especially if you work part-time, so make it comfortable. Think about adding some art work to your walls and maybe bring in a houseplant or two. If you like to listen to music while you work, bring in a radio or CD player.

Make sure your office is well lit. A retail or home improvement store usually carry a large selection of lamps or other lighting options. You can also find home decor accents such as mirrors or picture frames that can let your put your personal touch into your office.

One of the biggest problems of working from home is that you will have distractions to deal with. Some people find it very hard to ignore laundry, unwashed dishes or a yard that needs mowing. Noisy children or barking dogs can also be distracting not only to you, but to your client or boss that may be on the other end of the telephone.

Set some ground rules with your family. Make it clear that when you are working, you are not to be disturbed unless it is an emergency. Ideally, your office space will have a door that you can close when you are working to shut out distractions.

Working at home can save you a lot of money on things such as gas, wear and tear on your vehicle and clothing. It does take a great amount of self discipline to be successful, but you may very well find that the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
