A home is supposed to be a place to relax, a refuge from the outside world. So why is it that all too often people don’t feel comfortable in their own homes? The first thing to consider it the décor. Although we try to create homes that look as beautiful and stylish as possible, sometimes the result ends up looking way too contrived. So if the furnishings and accents in your home are only there for looks, consider that it may be time for a change.

Home Is About Making YOU Feel Good
Of course, you want your home to look attractive to others, but you need to ask yourself, at what price? If you find that when you’re home you can’t stretch out and enjoy your surroundings, then you need to make a decision. You need to remember that this is your home and it’s important that you feel at home within it. Home is meant to be a place where families can relax, talk about the day’s activities, and enjoy life. Your home surroundings should put you totally at ease and make you feel happy.

Who says you have to go with a certain style in your home? You don’t have to be so particular about your décor that in a country-style home, you can’t place items that don’t necessarily fit that style. What makes a home individual and different is all those quirky things placed here and there.

You should definitely include all those photos, tapestries, and other accents that are special to you. Sometimes rooms that are too refined look uncomfortable, Thus, eclectic décor is a great look. The goal is not to create a room where everything is perfect, as if nothing has ever been touched. Rather, you want the room to look lived in, to feel warm and inviting.

What About Color?
In décor and style, color plays a huge role. Whether it is classic tan and beige or a bolder, more dramatic color like royal, red, or gold, literally everything you place into a room is going to have color. Color has a real effect on your mood, whether it’s a soft pastel, a botanical, or another color. However, many people don’t realize the impact color can have. Beige and tan hues are relaxing, while bright, citrusy colors tend to refresh and lift your mood. On the other hand, dramatic colors can add elegance to the atmosphere.

Don’t be too hasty in deciding what colors to use in a room. Take the time to consider how different colors affect you. How does a certain color make you feel? Which ones are your favorites?

Then splash some of those favorite colors on your furnishings, walls, and accents. You can also add depth to a room by using several shades of the same color. Paint the walls a lighter shade. Then you can use deeper shades for your doors, baseboards, and chair rails. It’s amazing how a simple change of color can make a room come alive.

It’s best to forget any rules when it comes to your home. In the end, what you want is a comfortable, relaxing space that you can look forward to coming home to at the end of a long day. What you want is to design a home that is uniquely your own. Why go with a style or design that only mimics what your friends have?

So strive to create a style of your own, one that speaks of originality. You will create a space you can feel at home in, and others will be impressed with your creative genius. In the end, “home sweet home” is simply having your home just the way you like it.
