Energy ratings are now prominently displayed on all new kitchen appliances, and we all feel pretty good about ourselves when we buy a product with a good energy rating, but what does an appliance actually do to conserve energy? Whirlpool have recently introduced a range of energy efficient appliances using ’6th sense’ technology, which have exactly that – a 6th sense.
6th Sense washing machines recognize the size of the load in the machine, and automatically adjust the cycle so they only use the amount of water, time and energy necessary for that load. As if that wasn’t clever enough, the ‘Detergent Overdosing’ indicator will also alert you at the end of the cycle if you are using more detergent that you need to. There is also a SuperEco setting which works by reducing tumbling and increasing soaking without raising the temperature too quickly, which reduces energy consumption.
Eco friendly tip: To reduce the energy consumed by the water heater in your washing machine, wash on cold or warm settings rather than hot whenever possible.
The ’6th Sense’ within the Whirlpool dishwashers automatically adjusts the wash cycle depending on the level of soiling, and there is a Multizone option which allows you to choose to use only the upper or lower rack if you don’t have much to wash.
Eco friendly tip: Hand washing your dishes uses a lot more water than a dishwasher.
Even though it may be easier to just purchase a new appliance and have it delivered and installed by someone else, this is not the time to make such wasteful decisions. A recession is not the time you should be throwing money around. Go with the used parts and place the extra money that you would have spent on a new appliance in the bank and let it grow. You just never know when a rainy day will come knocking at your door.
