This trusty RX-V663 didn’t have HDMI 1. 4 places to pass a 3D signal to help you my new LG Infinia, so I decided it’s time to replace my receiver.

I’ve for ages been a huge fan of Yamaha gear, not only for the way it’s built, but because their surround featres are typically much more natural than what I have heard on competing units from Sony plus Pioneer – and I’ve had quality issues up to now with Harmon / Kardon. So, including the RX-V667 seemed natural.

While I was sad to find that Yamaha is no longer licensing Nerve organs Surround anymore, they’ve definitely improved on their built-in sound fields, so it had not been too bad. What the huge, big, major leap forward was, is the ultra-modern GUI. Older Yamaha receivers that had on-screen displays were definitely to your more technical customer, but the new GUI is excellent. Everything is logically placed, and you’ll find it super responsive.

Two minor quibbles: Yamaha RX-V667 still provides a “secret” menu for things like arranging speaker impedance. If you’re running 6 ohm loudspeakers, the setting isn’t in the GUI. And also next quibble: instead of having a handy manual that notifys you what the button sequence is to sort through this setting, Yamaha includes a CD when using the manual instead of an actual hands-on. Environmentally, that’s probably good (not that CD’s will be the most environmentally friendly thing around). With regard to convenience, it left something to possibly be desired.

Now… in switching out receivers, I pointed out that the RX-V667 is a bit lighter than the 663, and was a little involved. But once I ran the auto-config using the included microphone and put my process through its paces on some Blu-Ray capability, my concerns were completely alleviated. Despite the fact they’re rated similarly, I couldn’t triumph over the sound quality on the 667. “Impressive” doesn’t continue to do it justice. The new amplifier design is just phenomenal, almost making me wish We made the change earlier.

And having said that, I purchased this in June 2011, simply as newer (but almost identically-featured) models are generally hitting stores. So, you can get a terrific deal on this unit right at this point, as everyone makes room for the revolutionary models. Having preordered my 663 in past times, I can tell you that there’s really no value ?n any way in having the freshest receiver probable, unless you have AV geeks and a house constantly, or for some uncommon reason, are looking at a receiver in this particular range and don’t already have something Pandora-enabled to plug to it.
